Winter pruning in the vineyard
Today we take a closer look at the work carried out in the vineyards by Ivano, Davide and their team: winter pruning of the vines.
Winter pruning preserves the chosen training system and controls both the quantity and quality of production through the number of buds left on each plant. It is essential for balancing vegetative growth and fruit production, with a direct effect on yield and grape quality.
The vine produces mainly on the current year’s shoots, which develop from buds on the previous year’s wood. The number of buds retained determines the potential number of bunches and must be selected according to soil fertility and the vigour of the grape variety and rootstock.
As our grandfathers Pietro and Alessio used to say: “The vine itself tells you how it should be pruned.”
